40,000 bees evicted from Queens, New York home

WATCH: Elise Finch reports that it took four hours for an expert to remove the huge hive that housed over 40,000 honeybees.

NEW YORK – It wasn’t a monster making a ruckus under the floor of a New York City bedroom. But it was still a bit scary.

The homeowner Mary Jean Dyczko said she first noticed a few hundred bees last summer, but was advised to wait until spring to remove the hive without killing any bees.

An expert found about 40,000 bees in the Queens, New York home.

Retired NYPD Detective Anthony Planakis, known as Tony Bees, was the man for the mission.

It took him four hours to extract the unwanted residents on Monday night.

The Daily News says honey dripped off the massive honeycomb as it was pulled piecemeal from beneath siding and plywood.

“When he opened that area and took the floorboard down, and I saw this hive that was huge and just covered with layers of bees, it was shocking,” said Dyczko.

The colony is getting a new residence upstate.
