WINNIPEG — The sidewalk isn’t Scott Belford’s preferred path but the cyclist says he doesn’t have much of a choice.

“I’m kind of deterred on riding on the road because it’s not as good and I don’t trust people in the cars,” said Belford.

It’s why he welcomes the Winnipeg Trails Association’s idea to build a protected bike lane along Rue des Meurons.

“When it’s heavier traffic, it’s a little scary,” said Belford.

The recommendation is one of 109 the Winnipeg Trails Association has come up with after reviewing all of the local roads up for repair this year. This is the first time the organization has put the city’s street renewal plan under the microscope. It’s goal is to highlight design tweaks to promote active transportation.

“If there’s a trail 250 meters away, it might as well be 250 miles away if you have to cross a big road or if you’re eight-years-old and you have to cross it on your BMX,” said the Winnipeg Trails Association’s Anders Swanson.

The entire 24 page report can be found on the association’s website. It has passed the document along to city council and is hopeful some of its suggestions will be carried out once construction begins. The mayor though has yet to see the recommendations.
