Snow and chilly temperatures to continue across Metro Vancouver

Snow has once again started falling on Metro Vancouver this morning, with the regional cold spell expected to continue through much of the week.

At around 6 a.m. a light snow started to fall on downtown Vancouver, dusting streets and sidewalks.

The snow fall was much heavier in the Fraser Valley.

Environment Canada issued a heavy snowfall warning for the Fraser Valley predicting between 15 and 20 centimetres of snow by the end of today for parts of the valley, including Abbotsford. Early morning chatter on Twitter described “white out” conditions in the Fraser Valley.

The weather service also warned that wind chill could drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius inland of the coast through the next few days.

Up to two centimetres of snow may accumulate in downtown Vancouver and areas of Richmond by this evening, with more snow anticipated in parts of Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.

TransLink has activated its “snow-plan,” spokesman Drew Snider. The main concern is ice on the roads, he said.

“Snow is falling in many parts of Metro Vancouver, but it’s not affecting bus service at this time,” Snider said in an email at around 6 a.m. this morning. “All buses are on regular routing.”

He said SkyTrain staff are watching the situation and will be on hand on transit routes should the snow start causing problems.

“Things could change during the day, so we remind everyone to dress for the elements with proper footwear and expect that there could be some delays between buses and even diversions at times, if road conditions dictate,” he said.

“We’re in touch with municipal work crews to ensure that roads are cleared up,” Snider said. “We’re also making sure that trolley overheads are de-iced.”

Black ice caused temporary road closures Sunday, including the Fraser Highway between 208th and 216th streets, parts of Langley and in some areas of Coquitlam.
