Regina to conduct first ever homeless count

Adrian Raaber / Global News

REGINA – Local shelters in the Queen City will execute their first ever point-in-time-count on homelessness Wednesday night.

Starting at 10 p.m. around 120 volunteers will literally do a street count and shelters will provide information on the clients they are currently serving.

John Bailey, the general manager at the YMCA of Regina said the idea is to get a snap shot of the number of people struggling to put a roof over their head in our city and help them move off of the streets permanently.

“If we’re finding that certain segments, or cross sections, of the population are over represented or under represented we can start to make policy and funding allocations that serve those populations,” he added.

Stakeholders hope to conduct the count every year, to track long term homelessness trends.
