SASKATOON – The verdict is in on a long weekend weather forecast that hasn’t always been so sunny in the past. Historically, the Victoria Day long weekend in Saskatoon has brought anything from 30 degree heat to over 10 centimetres of snowfall.

This May long weekend is shaping up to be one of the nicer ones central Saskatchewan has seen.

After a very slow, but steady warming trend through the work week with highs climbing about a degree a day Sunday through Thursday, a boost of heat will accelerate a return to temperatures approaching 20 degrees Friday afternoon.

Saturday is shaping up to start off stellar, with Saskatoon’s seasonal daytime high of around 20 degrees being reached midday, however shortly after hitting that high, noticeable changes will begin to kick in.

A cold front is set to slide through later in the day on Saturday, bringing with it clouds, possible showers and thunderstorms, as well as winds of sustained speeds near 40 km/h gusting into the 60 km/h range.

Winds are expected to remain strong throughout most of Saturday night, easing off heading into Sunday morning.

Sunday is projected to start off cool in the Saskatoon area, with clouds clearing by morning and a strong northeasterly wind dropping temperatures to or slightly below freezing.

Afternoon highs that day are expected to just barely climb into double digits, however sunshine should prevail through the entire day.

Clear skies and sunshine will stick around for potentially up to four consecutive days as an upper ridge of high pressure is expected to dominate the weather pattern Sunday through Wednesday.

Monday morning will also be cool, with the mercury possibly falling a degree or two below freezing, however afternoon sunshine and the beginning of another warming trend will see temperatures back up in the mid-teens by midday.

For those extending their long weekend vacations into the work week, you will be pleased you did.

The forecast is calling for 20 degree temperatures and loads of sunshine for the entire work week and beyond.
