CALGARY – Plans to close the Calgary Young Offender Centre (CYOC) and the Calgary Maintenance Enforcement Program (MEP) office have been put on hold.

The controversial closures were initially announced by the province back in March, along with plans for inmates currently housed at the CYOC to be moved to Edmonton.

However, on Friday, it was announced the closures would be halted until an internal review could be conducted.

When the closures were announced, AUPE called them a “huge injustice to Albertans,” and argued that moving troubled teens away from their families and support networks would only make it harder to rehabilitate them.

“We’re immensely relieved that these bad decisions are being reconsidered,” said AUPE Vice-President Erez Raz. “Hopefully this new government will do what’s best for local communities and families.”

“Both of these closures could do serious harm to southern Alberta families,” He added. “We hope the internal review will conclude that both facilities should remain open.”

AUPE believes the closures would result in the loss of approximately 50 jobs, mostly on the front line.

The internal review is to be completed by May 31.
