Surrey gets garbage collection app

If you live in Surrey and have a smart phone, you don’t need to ever worry about missing another garbage pickup again.

The city of Surrey launched a new app called my-waste that gives instant access to waste collection schedules and services.

It also includes information on materials accepted for recycling, composting or disposal, and drop-off depots.

Surrey is the first municipality in British Columbia to implement such an app.

Mayor Dianne Watts says the new service will help residents transition to new collection services, which begin this fall.

The app is free and available for iPhone, iPod touch, and Android devices. A blackberry app is also in the works.

The city will still provide printed materials about waste collection for its not-so-tech savvy residents.

The City of Surrey communications specialist Tara Foslien told Global News the app cost $2,200 to develop.
