Sydney court building evacuated after suspicious package delivered

HALIFAX – A courthouse in Sydney was evacuated Wednesday after a suspicious package was delivered, according to police.

Employees at the Sydney Justice Centre contacted police after receiving an envelope by regular mail. Police said they did not open it and nobody came in contact with its contents.

Suspicious packages were also intercepted on Wednesday by Canada Post at courthouses in Yarmouth, Digby, Truro and Port Hawkesbury.

On Tuesday, similar suspicious packages arrived at Supreme Court buildings in Halifax, Kentville and Truro, and a provincial courthouse in Bridgewater.

The law courts building in Halifax was evacuated briefly while police investigated.

On Monday, four employees at provincial court in Amherst were sent to hospital complaining of nausea, dizziness and a burning sensation in the throat after a suspicious package was delivered.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the Nova Scotia RCMP announced it would oversee the investigations into the packages.
