Rock quarry in northeastern Nova Scotia receives approval with conditions

GEORGEVILLE, N.S. – A proposed rock quarry expansion in northeastern Nova Scotia has been approved by provincial regulators.

Alva Construction Ltd. applied last year to expand its quarry in Georgeville, N.S., from four hectares to 54 hectares.

Environment minister Sterling Belliveau approved the application on Monday with some conditions being applied.

Company officials are required to come up with a traffic management plan in consultation with municipal officials.

The project also won’t be allowed to blast within 800 metres of a property site without written approval from the property owner.

The company is prohibted from quarrying within 50 metres of certain types of wetlands unless approval is given by provincial officials.
