iPhone 4S consumes twice as much data as older model

TORONTO – The demand for data among smartphone users has surpassed all expectations – but no smartphone user is hungrier for data than owners of the iPhone 4S.

Overall, iPhone 4S users demand twice the amount of data as the iPhone 4, and three times as much data as the iPhone 3G, according to a new study.

The study, conducted by Arieso – a company that provides network management software solutions– compared data usage across a variety of smartphones.

The reason for the significant jump in data demand from one model to the next is the introduction of more sophisticated, data-intense features.

This, “coupled with growing consumer demand, is creating unrelenting pressure on mobile networks,” says study author and Arieso CTO Dr. Michael Flanagan.

Features such as Siri, iCloud processing and higher quality cameras, are causing unprecedented levels of user demand for data.

“The capacity crunch is still a very real threat for mobile operators, and it looks set to only get harder in 2012.”

The study predicts that within the next 12 to 18 months, devices like the iPhone 4S will dominate the market.

The study also finds that “extreme” data users are becoming even more extreme – with one per cent of subscribers responsible for consuming half of all downloaded data.
