Black bear tranquilized, moved, after being spotted in South Vancouver

VANCOUVER – A black bear made a rare appearance Tuesday morning, roaming the streets of Vancouver.

The bear was spotted in the early hours in the area of East 49th Avenue and Tyne Street.

Police cruisers were even called out and eventually after a wild chase, the bear was captured in a resident’s backyard in the 1100-block of 53rd Avenue, near Inverness Street.

It’s expected the bear will be moved somewhere in the woods.

“There is no previous history regarding this bear,” said conservation officer, Todd Hunter. “It is kind of unusual to us. In an area like this we would get numerous calls regarding a bear in the urban area, however, we don’t have any background information.”

“Possible ways it could have gotten in here is the river below – the Fraser River is just down below. One possibility is it made its way along the river and then through the urban corridor.”
