Extra security at Montreal city hall sparks criticism

MONTREAL — Some Montreal residents and opposition city councillors are sounding the alarm about what they see as too much security at city hall.

Some Montrealers are suggesting things have gone too far and they’re having trouble getting access to the public building.

“The experience of coming to city hall is really stressful,” Montreal resident Laurent Morisette told reporters Monday.

“I went to city hall earlier this year and I was denied access and asking questions because the quota was already full.”

Morisette, who uses a wheelchair, has to organize adapted transit to get to meetings.

After a rowdy union protest in August of 2014, city officials decided to tighten security.

Extra guards were added and a quota for council meetings was put in place.

The number of questions at council dropped from 30 to 15.

City councillor Alain Vaillancourt wasn’t impressed.

“This is supposed to be the people’s building. It sends the wrong message.”
