SASKATOON – Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Saskatoon, Prince Albert and the surrounding area with 15 to 20 centimetres of snow expected by Sunday morning.

The agency says winter is planning to return to parts of Saskatchewan this weekend, courtesy of a developing low pressure system which is moving northward into the province.

The system spread rain Friday night into Saturday morning into southern Saskatchewan and as the rain pushes northward it will change to snow as it moves into colder air.

The snow is expected to begin this morning in the Saskatoon and Prince Albert area and continue throughout the day and into the night.

Freezing rain is also possible this morning.

READ MORE: Heavy snow and rain forecasted for Saskatoon this weekend

Temperatures cooled faster than expected Friday night in Saskatoon, which became a detriment to the precipitation type forecasted Saturday, turning what was expected to primarily be a rain event into a heavy snowfall.

Most weather models were indicating a major precipitation event slated to hit the city Saturday would fall primary as rain, however with a cooler than anticipated atmosphere, that 30 to 40 millimetres of rain is now being projected to slam the Bridge City with 15 to 20 centimetres of snow.

With an above freezing ground, much of the initial snowfall will melt upon contact with the surface, however it is expected to begin accumulating midday through into Sunday.

Treacherous driving conditions are expected across the region with the heavy snow and winds holding sustained speeds around 30 km/h, gusting into the 50 km/h range reducing visibility to near zero at times.

Motorists planning to head out on roads are advised to use caution and check in with Saskatchewan Highway Hotline before heading out.
