WATCH: Oklahoma cop dragged nearly 200 feet during traffic stop

TORONTO – The Moore, Oklahoma Police Department is praising the restraint shown by one of their officers after dashcam footage shows he was dragged nearly 200 feet during a routine traffic stop.

It happened this past Monday at around 1:45 a.m., when officer Jerrod Queen pulled over a white hatchback for failing to stop at a stop sign on the 800 block of Southwest 4th Street.

Officer Queen soon realized the man he had pulled over was 41-year-old Joseph Brand, wanted on two separate methamphetamine and marijuana arrest warrants in Valleybrook, and Del City, Oklahoma, in the past four months.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Dashcam footage shows Officer Queen calmly explaining to Brand why he had initially pulled him over, as well as asking him to step out of the car.

Suddenly, Brand takes off, with Officer Queen clinging to his vehicle. He is dragged nearly 200 feet on the side of Brand’s car, but doesn’t let go and continues to wrestle with Brand for control of the vehicle.

Eventually, Queen is able to seize control of the vehicle, bring it to a stop, and arrest Brand.

Now the Moore Police Department is praising Officer Queen’s restraint and judgment in bringing a dangerous situation to an end.

“He could have done what we call a felony traffic stop,” Police Spokesman Jeremy Lewis told News 9 Oklahoma. “And pulled his weapon and ordered the guy out of the vehicle. He was, you know, trying to be polite to the guy even though he had a felony warrant.”

In addition to the two outstanding warrants, police also found 47 grams of pot inside Brand’s car.

He is currently in Cleveland County Jail awaiting trial.
