MONTREAL — It has been a long battle but after months of treatment, including three weeks in a New York City Hospital, Matthew Schreindorfer is back home in Laval.

“I was discharged from the hospital at the beginning of the week, as my blood count was close to normal!” Schreindorfer wrote on his Help Save Matthew Facebook page.

“One feeling that is also amazing is coming home… coming home to my comfortable bed, my family, friends and last but not least, my dog!”

On April 9, the 25-year-old announced via Facebook that he was in remission.

He spent two more weeks in hospital recovering from the gruelling treatment, including a stay in the Intensive Care Unit.

The 25-year-old was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) last summer.

When treatments in Quebec failed, his family turned to experimental treatment in the United States.

Schreindorfer was accepted into an experimental gene therapy treatment program at Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center in New York.

The treatment was very expensive and his family turned towards crowd funding to help raise the $800,000 needed to cover the cost.

So far, they have raised more than $780,000 dollars.

“Unfortunately, this is not the end of the journey for me,” he wrote.

“I will be getting a bone marrow transplant in about three weeks! I will be doing the transplant in Montreal, because, as you have all been witness to, it is definitely NOT cheap in the States!”

The family is still waiting for that medical bill to arrive.

In the meantime, Matthew will spend the next few weeks at home resting and regaining his strength.

“I will try to enjoy the next three weeks with my family and friends, as much as possible, before I go back into the hospital,” he wrote.
