HALIFAX – Emergency crews have stopped searching for a 25-year-old Ontario man who was swept into the water off the coast of Peggy’s Cove, N.S.

First responders fanned out across the rocks in the area after receiving the call for a missing man around 12:15 p.m. Atlantic Time Wednesday. Police and firefighters received help from a Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre helicopter and three coast guard boats.

But six hours after he fell into the water, the RCMP ended said their search.

Police confirmed the man is an Ontario resident, but wouldn’t give his name pending notification of family.

The man and a female companion were walking along the rocks when a large wave swept him into the ocean. The woman was unhurt.

RCMP Cpl. Greg Church said the foggy, choppy conditions made the area particularly treacherous.

“The risk is always there. It’s a risky area to sightsee in,” Church said.

Peggys Cove is a small rural community located on the eastern short of St. Margaret’s Bay in Nova Scotia and is home to the iconic white and red Peggys Point Lighthouse.
