Montreal hopsitals have rival claims over 2012’s first baby

Is it José or Tyler?

Two boys born a fraction of a second apart have sparked a little dust up over Montreal’s first baby of 2012.

Tyler Stephen Wilson arrived at midnight – and a quarter of a second – at the Royal Victoria Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). That makes baby Tyler the first. The “digital” time element was supplied by the birthing doctor, said Rebecca Burns of the MUHC.

However nurses at Maisonneuve Rosemont Hospital say baby José Palacio Zapata was probably the first. José was born just two seconds after midnight and that time was checked on a cellular phone.

“That’s more precise than a wall clock,” said Maisonneuve-Rosemont Christine Lussier spokesperson.

As the two medical institutions grappled with this debate, the newborns, José or Tyler, had nothing further to contribute.

Both babies and their families are doing fine.
