Almost 70% of Canadians will usher in the New Year with some New Year’s Resolutions.
While the kinds of resolutions people make are as unique as the individuals themselves, there are those that seem to crop up every year.
A study by Kellogg’s Canada shows that ‘Self Improvement’, ‘Exercise’ and ‘Eating Right’ top the list.
However, it is tough work to make those resolutions stick.
The Canadian survey shows that while 68% of Canadians make a New Year’s pledge, 55% do not achieve it.
If better health and exercise are on your ‘to do’ list this year, there are some things you can do to set yourself up for success.

Gyms are always bustling in January, but by February they are back to normal levels.
Kelowna-based personal trainer, Tracy Steen, says the key is not to rely on motivation alone.
“Instead of relying totally on motivation they need to rely on structure, it’s in my day timer, calendar, Blackberry, it’s listed in my day and I’m going to take care of myself that way,” Steen said.
While fitness classes and personal trainers do help keep you motivated, they also cost money.
That, however, is an excuse that Steen says does not accept.

“(They say) I can’t exercise because it’s too expensive, but a skipping rope isn’t and stairs are free,” she said.
Speaking of free, exercise does not give you a free pass to eat whatever you want.
“You can’t out exercise a bad diet”, explains Steen. “So if you have a bad diet, you are not going to see the results you want to see, so diet is huge.”
She advises people eat clean, wholesome food, practice moderation and portion control and make sure you are eating enough.
“Sometimes the problem is if you don’t put a log on the fire every 2 to 3 hrs and keep your metabolism burning, food will be stored as fat and you will maintain the weight instead of losing it”, warns Steen.
There are so many ways to improve your health and many people fail because they get caught in the details.
Steen advises keeping it simple: just eat real food and move your body!
