UPDATE – RCMP have identified the arson suspect as 40-year-old man of no fixed address.
“He was under the influence, according to him, under the influence of drugs and alcohol. He certainly showed signs of intoxication,” says S/Sgt. Kurt Lozinski.
The man was released from custody after being assessed by a mental health team which concluded he was no longer a danger to himself or the public.
He has a court date in June.
PENTICTON – A man will likely be charged with arson following a fire early Friday in Penticton.
Fire crews were called to the Husky gas station on Fairview Avenue at about 2:45 a.m.
The fire chief says it appears someone stuffed paper into an exterior wire cage containing bundles of firewood and set it ablaze.
It was quickly extinguished with only little damage to the building.
Fire crews then noticed someone on the roof and called police.
A City of Penticton bucket truck was called in to remove the man who had used a fire department ladder to climb onto the roof.
Business operations at the gas station were not affected.
