CALGARY – Three people have lost their home after a fire in the northwest community of Montgomery Thursday afternoon.

Around 2:20 p.m. a neighbour spotted flames and smoke at the back of a house on 21 Avenue N.W. and called 911. Fire crews quickly put out the fire and stopped it spreading to neighbouring houses.

No one was home at the time, but two cats did not survive, despite CPR and oxygen treatment.

The fire caused significant damage, and officials said residents would be displaced for some time. It’s unknown whether there were working smoke alarms or what caused the fire.

No injuries were reported.
