Politicians are accustomed to the rollercoaster ride of living in the public eye.
Polls go up, and they go down.
But North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory became intimately familiar with a more literal sinking feeling in front of an audience Thursday.
While settling into his chair for a roundtable discussion at the Durham Innovation District, McCrory’s wheeled chair slipped out from under him, sending the politician tumbling to the ground. McCrory was apparently unaware that his chair had wheels.
A chorus of gasps followed as his fellow participants reached out to help him up.
“That was on camera!” he laughed, finishing his tumbling act as he got to his feet with a big “Ta-da!” gesture.
“I’ve been in public office now for 20 years and that has never happened,” he joked.
Even as the event moderator began to speak, McCory interjected, saying in reference to the wheeling chair, “Boy these things are slick!”
