Wildrose’s Rick Strankman apologizes for ‘Bring your wife’s pie’ poster

CALGARY – Harmless or sexist? Twitter users are divided over a Wildrose candidate’s poster that asked supporters to bring their wives’ pies to an “old fashioned pie” meet-and-greet event for the party.

Rick Strankman, running in the riding of Drumheller-Stettler, issued an apology on Thursday, saying it was posted by volunteers.

Some called the poster sexist; others saw it as a harmless joke targeting rural Albertans.

Wildrose Party Leader Brian Jean told reporters he’d spoken to Strankman about it, and was aware the poster had been removed.

NDP Leader Rachel Notley took a lighter approach, answering questions about the poster with a laugh.

“I think Mr. Strankman has some perhaps out-of-date assumptions about who does the cooking where,” she said.

“I would say that perhaps it’s clear he has a sweet tooth, but he needs a wisdom tooth.”
