CALGARY – Flames fans aren’t the only ones excited for the prospect of a long NHL playoff run: Local businesses including hotels, restaurants and bars suggest the economic potential is in the millions.
Jerseys were seen at every downtown Calgary corner on Wednesday for the first playoff game—the first in six years.
“It’s very exciting. We haven’t been around for a long time,” said Flames fan Robert Riley.
“I think it revives the city and brings everybody together,” said Stuart Walker.
The Calgary Downtown Association says many sports stores are seeing increased business, with fans upgrading their Flames gear.

“It really couldn’t have come at a better time for all of the businesses. Not just restaurants but retail as well,” said spokesperson Maggie Shofield.
Staff at Flames Central expect the bar to be at capacity with more than 1,000 fans, and restaurants are excited for the money-making opportunity.
At National on the Red Mile, there are plans for extra security.
“It is the playoffs, and people get a little into it,” said National’s Lisa Warkentin.
But even if there’s a minor concern for rowdiness, the playoff spot comes with overwhelming positivity.
“The Flames have done a fabulous job this year of showing pure determination and overcoming obstacles and – you know – for the business community, that’s great for the psyche right now,” said VP of marketing, communications and research for Calgary Economic Development Mary Moran.
