For 16 young hockey players from Abbotsford, Christmas came early this year.

The Abbotsford Ice Atom team, made up of 16 nine and 10-year-old girls, won Scotiabank’s Bigger Save contest and will be travelling to P.E.I in February to take part in their Hockey Day in Canada.

“This is a fantastic experience for our girls to improve their skills and take advantage of an opportunity that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives,” said Rod Wiebe, team manager. “Going across the country to be a part of Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada in P.E.I. will help our team members grow both as hockey players and as young women.”

The team entered the competition after they pledged to save money to travel to two tournaments, one in Langley and one in Surrey.

Wiebe said they organized an extra practice to tell the girls, and played the announcement they had won on the JumboTron at the end. A lot of excited screaming ensued. “Nine and ten years old, obviously a lot,” Wiebe laughed.

The Scotiabank branch in Abbotsford is also thrilled their team was chosen. “We’re still talking about it today and how exciting it is for the young girls,” said Jane Beaver, branch manager.

“We are a firm believer in giving back to the community in which we live.”

The girls, along with 10 chaperons, will travel to Charlottetown P.E.I to take part in one exhibition game, meet some NHL players, and be a part of CBC’s coverage on February 11.

With a good season already so far, Wiebe said this is just “the whipped cream on top of the cake.”
