Unlicensed collection agents target Sask. consumers, businesses

REGINA – Saskatchewan’s financial and consumer affairs authority has issued an alert about unlicensed collection agents. The agency says consumers and businesses in the province have recently been targeted by people posing as collections agencies.

In Saskatchewan, collection agents are required to be licensed to operate in the province under The Collections Agents Act.

Officials with financial and consumer affairs say before anyone makes a payment, they should ask for the license number of the agency and then confirm online at FCAA411.

People and businesses can also contact the consumers protection division at 306-787-5550, toll free at 1-877-880-5550 or by email if they believe they have been contacted by an unlicensed collection agent.

Anyone who believes they have been the victim of fraud should contact their local police detachment or the consumer anti-fraud centre.
