Theft prompts fast getaway to Okanagan Lake

A stolen dump truck made off from police at speeds that reached close to 120 km/ h Saturday night, running red lights and driving erratically across Kelowna.

Lake Country RCMP attempted to pull over the truck after it was reported stolen from a compound on Grigg Road north of Kelowna just before midnight. Police did not chase the truck.

The truck was seen driving erratically and running red lights until it was abandoned near the WR Bennett Bridge.

An RCMP service dog was brought in to track down the suspects. A 46-year-old Penticton man and a 33-year-old Mission man were located in Okanagan Lake near Mill Creek Road.

Police also found two large spools of copper wire in the back of the dump truck.

The men appeared in court Monday charged with theft and dangerous driving charges. Both are known to police for criminal code related offences.

Vernon RCMP are attempted to see if the copper was stolen from a BC Hydro yard in Vernon. RCMP say five roles were reported missing Sunday morning from 1401 Kalamalka Lake Road.

Tire patterns found at the Vernon crime scene indicate a piece of heavy equipment was used in the break and enter. Nearby in the Finning yard, a front end loader was found running.

RCMP continue to investigate.
