NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. – Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency (WSA) has issued a high flow warning for the Battle River near North Battleford. The agency says recent inspections show a significant build up of ice where the Battle River flows into the North Saskatchewan River.

WSA officials say this is creating a risk for potential flooding.

Flows on the Battle River are roughly 50 cubic metres per second (cms). While the agency says flows are not expected to reach the 104 cms level from 2011, there is the chance for out-of-bank flow, particularly in low lying areas.

Water flows from Alberta on the Battle River have increased in the past week and are expected to peak in the next few days. WSA officials say that flow, along with local inflows expected to start over the weekend, will result in peak flows arriving at Battleford early next week.

Officials are urging people to exercise caution when working on or near the river as ice jams have the potential to quickly cause flooding and create hazardous situations.
