Teen seriously injured after hit twice in crosswalk

A teenage boy is in hospital with serious injuries after he was struck not once, but twice, in a crosswalk in northeast Calgary Monday at around 7:45 a.m.

Police say the 16-year-old was crossing the street on a skateboard at Beddington Boulevard and Beddington Drive N.E. when he was hit by a Hummer.

The boy picked himself up and appeared to be uninjured, when the Hummer was hit from behind by another vehicle, a Hyundai.

The impact pushed the Hummer forward, knocking down the teen again.

The boy is in Foothills hospital with internal injuries that EMS describes as potentially life-threatening.

“What we had was, essentially, a minor collision that occurred with the pedestrian initially,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Stacey. “And then it turned into something much, much worse when the second collision happened.”

Stacey said a collision reconstruction team was called to the scene to piece together the chain of events. It is also investigating whether the rising sun in the east was a factor, blinding the driver who rear-ended the Hummer. Police have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors.

On Monday afternoon police said charges are pending against the driver of the Hyundai.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw what happened to contact them.
