Kelowna farmers’ market stays put for 2015

KELOWNA – It’s good news for those wanting to keep a 20 year tradition alive. The outdoor version of the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market will be staying at its usual location at Springfield Road and Dilworth Drive, at least for now. However, market manager, Gisele Glover, says they’ve outgrown the current site.

“We are bursting at the seams,” says Glover. “We have 180 plus vendors and really the lot was designed for quite a bit less than that.”

The moving debate caused controversy last year, after the Market’s board of directors approved a move to Clement Avenue. But vendors rejected the change, and Glover says the site is off the table right now.

Land right across the street from the current site has also been floated as a possible future location, and there is already a sign there proclaiming the area the future home of the Mission Creek Open Air Market. However, Glover says no decisions have been made about a potential move across the street.

“There [are] still talks with the developer,” she says. “There [have] been talks for quite a few years.”

Any move wouldn’t happen until at least 2016. The outdoor market is opening for the season this Wednesday.

The part owner of the proposed development across the street says they are pushing forward with plans to build a market. Lambert Schmalz says the Kelowna Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market is their first choice to occupy the space.
