CALGARY – Calgary Police and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) announced the closure of a so-called drug den in the northeast, after police had been called to the home 27 times during the past four months.
The investigation began in November 2014 after several community complaints related to drug trafficking. ALERT’s Safer Communities and Neighbourhood (SCAN) team closed the home at 108 Malvern Court NE on Friday.
Three of the 27 calls were related to suspected overdose deaths. A December 2014 search of the residence found heroin, drug paraphernalia and stolen property.
The Malvern Court home will be closed for 90 days during which time the tenant is barred from entering the property. A closure obtained through court order forces the owner to change the locks, board up the windows, and fence in the property.
Eighteen “problem properties” have been closed in the Calgary area since SCAN’s 2008 launch—these can include homes used for prostitution, gangs, use of drugs and drug trafficking. SCAN received more than 400 complaints about problem properties across Alberta last year, said ALERT in a release.
If you suspect illegal activity is occurring at a property in your neighbourhood, you can confidentially contact SCAN at www.alert-ab.ca/scan or at 1-866-960-SCAN (7226). ALERT reminds residents to never investigate suspected problem properties on their own.
