WINNIPEG — All students at the University of Winnipeg will soon be required to take at least one indigenous studies course to be able to graduate.
The University of Winnipeg Senate approved the motion Thursday. It was put forth in February by the University’s Student Association and Aboriginal Students’ Council.
“We have taken an important step on the path to a better, more understanding, and inclusive society. The University of Winnipeg is proud to be a catalyst for positive change,” Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor of UWinnipeg said in a news release sent out Thursday afternoon.
The university hopes this change will result in students forming positive relationships with indigenous people and learning to see from new perspectives.
