Watch above: Lindsay and Cathy from the Saskatoon SPCA explain the circumstances on the seizure of a number of dachshunds and their ongoing recovery.
SASKATOON – It’s a new life for 12 dachshunds at the Saskatoon SPCA. They have been recovering since March 3 after being seized from a neglectful situation.
Although 20 dogs were initially brought in, eight had to be humanely put down.
“Unfortunately when we had the dogs show up, a lot of them were in all kinds of physical distress,” explained Cathy Brin, volunteer and public relations coordinator at the shelter.

“We felt it was in their best interest to humanely euthanize them. It was a really tough decision for our staff and the vets that were out at our shelter, but we really wanted to do what was most fair for them.”
The staff and volunteers at the SPCA have been hard at work getting the 12 surviving dogs fit for adoption. The dogs all needed extensive dental surgeries and had to be spayed or neutered. None of the dogs were house trained, and all need to be properly socialized.
“They didn’t come from the best situation,” said Lindsay Royale, education and public relations coordinator at the Saskatoon SPCA, “so we’re just making sure to get them healthy and happy and make sure they are ready for adoption.”

The SPCA is planning a fun race for the dogs to raise funds for the estimated $25,000 cost to to save them and to show just how far the dogs have come.
The dogs have all been given condiment names and online pages have been set up where people can bet on which dog will come out on top.
