CALGARY – The first-degree murder trial for the father and stepmother of six-year-old Meika Jordan continued on Tuesday with Meika’s mother taking the stand to testify.

Spencer Jordan and Marie Magoon are accused of killing Meika in November of 2011.

The Crown alleges that Meika was abused and tortured for four days before being taken to hospital, and that Jordan and Magoon played equal roles in the abuse.

Both have pleaded not guilty.

On Tuesday, Meika’s mother Kyla Woodhouse shared details about her custody battle with Jordan.

She and Jordan had two children together, Meika and Levi, before separating in June of 2009. Woodhouse said a custody battle started soon after Jordan started dating Magoon.

She testified that she had called police in August of 2011 when her two children disappeared for several weeks while under Jordan’s care. They were later found at Inn from the Cold, an emergency family shelter.

Woodhouse said Meika had cuts and bruises when she picked her up from shelter; she said her daughter told her they were from a car accident.

Soon after, a judge gave primary custody of the children to Jordan; Woodhouse was allowed to see the kids on the first, second and third weekends of the month.
