A tugboat sank in the Georgia Strait this afternoon, but the two people on board were able to swim to a nearby island.
It happened near Halfmoon Bay on the Sunshine Coast at 3:40 p.m. this afternoon. Two helicopters, a buffalo aircraft, a hovercraft and an additional Coast Guard vessel were sent to the area.

However, the two people on board were able to swim 200 metres south to Merry Island, a small island two kilometres from the Sunshine Coast. Both were unhurt.
It’s unknown why the vessel sunk.
