Thompson, Dauphin and northern Manitoba generally have the province’s highest drunk driving rates, data shows.
Using an access-to-information request, Global News obtained a file from Manitoba Public Insurance showing the number of individual drivers with at least one impaired drving conviction in 2009 by the first three characters of their postal codes. We also obtained the total number of drivers by postal area to establish a rate.
R0B, a sprawling postal code covering the northern half of the province, had Manitoba’s highest rate, with 6.8 convicted drunk drivers per 1,000 drivers. A top 10 list takes in Thompson, The Pas, Flin Flon, Selkirk, South Interlake and the two postal codes north and south of Dauphin, and Dauphin itself. All have rates over 3.2 impaired convictions per 1,000 drivers – the Manitoba average is 1.8.
