Winnipeg sets temperature record

Shannon Cuciz/ Global News

WINNIPEG – For the first time in months, double digit temperatures are expected in Manitoba this weekend.

A high of 13C was recorded by Environment Canada Saturday, beating the record temperature of 11C in 1981 for the day.

Driving ranges like Shooters Golf Centre in Winnipeg are once again open, much earlier than usual.

“When the rumours got out that we’d be open this weekend, the phone just started ringing like crazy,” said said the owner of Shooters Family Golf Centre Guido Cerasani. “We had an early start, there was people out here at 9:30.”

The last time Winnipeg saw double digit temperatures was October 26.

But the warmer weather also means more ice and snow melting, making river conditions dangerous.

Fire crews have already been called to more than a dozen water rescues and are training to prepare for more.

“This is also when we get quite a few of the drownings,” said Ron St. Mars. “People fall into the water and are unable to do anything, swim or take care of themselves, so we just remind everybody to stay off the waterways right now.”

A high of 15C is expected Sunday.
