TORONTO – Ontario Provincial Police say distracted driving deaths will likely surpass those of impaired driving for the seventh consecutive year.

OPP statistics indicate that driver inattention has been the reason for 12 of 51 fatal collisions so far in 2015.

The news comes as Ontario police launches their annual distracted driving campaign which runs from March 13 to 20.

“Distracted driving is a danger to all road users. Fortunately, these same road users are in a position to help put a stop to it,” said Chief Superintendent Chuck Cox, Commander of the OPP Highway Safety Division, in a media release.

Police are reminding passengers to speak out when someone is distracted behind the wheel and to call 9-1-1 if they spot a motorist suspected of distracted driving.

“We want to see everyone develop and maintain a complete intolerance for distracted driving and make it the socially unacceptable driving behaviour that it should be,” said Cox.
