New details from Sask. town mourning death of boy

RADISSON, Sask. – Global News is learning more about the tragic death of a young boy near Radisson, Sask. on the weekend. Flags are still at half-mast in the town as residents mourn the loss of the 11-year-old boy who struck and killed by a Canadian National (CN) Railway train near the community.

The collision happened on Saturday. A 13-year-old boy was also hit and suffered minor injuries.

Radisson’s Mayor Dave Summers told Global News that a parent informed him the two youths were jumping into snow banks near the tracks at the time.

The mayor also said he expects railway safety to be a topic among residents once they’ve had time to mourn their loss.

“I think safety is always a concern in a town, CN’s been good to work with, trying to get it safer, but you can only do so much, I mean, unfortunately things happen,” said Summers.

Summers said he plans to contact CN in the near future.

A candle light vigil for the victim is scheduled for Friday. His name has not been released.
