EDMONTON — Following a tip from a member of the public, RCMP arrested a 34-year-old woman wanted for allegedly stabbing her own mother at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.
Officers say a female nurse was stabbed “numerous times in a targeted attack” just before noon Friday.
“The suspect is her daughter,” Staff Sgt. James Derouin with Red Deer RCMP said Saturday. “The information we received was the daughter had asked for money and the victim refused and shortly after that the accused produced a knife and stabbed the victim with the knife.
“The motive, I think, speaks for itself. The daughter was upset the mother wouldn’t give her any money and attacked her because of it.”
On Saturday, RCMP issued a warrant for the arrest of 34-year-old Meghan Claire Dion. The Red Deer woman was wanted for attempted murder and assault.
A nurse who works in the hospital’s hemodialysis unit and witnessed the incident told Global News the suspect came in through the doors at the back of the unit with a knife and asked her mother for money. The nurse was stabbed in her office, the witness added.
Police believed Dion was driving a light green or grey Mitsubishi Lancer with a rear spoiler. She was found operating the vehicle in the Oriole Park area before her arrest.
Alberta Health Services released a brief statement about the incident Friday evening.
“Earlier today AHS Protective Services responded to an incident at the Red Deer Regional Hospital,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the individual involved.
This was an isolated incident and at no time was there risk to patients.”
RCMP said Dion was previously known to police.
