EDMONTON – The Edmonton Oilers have traded defenceman Jeff Petry to the Montreal Canadiens for a pair of draft picks. The Oilers have acquired a 2nd round pick and a conditional 5th round pick in this year’s NHL Entry Draft for the blueliner.
That fifth-round pick reportedly becomes a fourth if the Canadiens reach the second round of the playoffs and a third if they reach the Eastern Conference final.
The right-shooting defensive defenceman was considered one of the most likely players to be dealt before 3 p.m. trade deadline.
Oiler fans took to Twitter immediately after the deal was announced, with the majority expressing their displeasure.
Petry was selected 45th overall by Edmonton in 2006 draft, and was first called up to Oilers during the 2010-11 season.
The 27-year-old had 74 points and 139 penalty minutes in 295 games with the Oilers, including 15 points in 59 games this season.
Petry is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
