An abandoned pit bull puppy with two broken front legs has been given a new shot at life thanks to a chance encounter.
A man driving home in Coachella, California spotted the six-month-old dog from a distance when its eyes reflected the car’s headlights among a pile of garbage. He gave the dog some food, water and a blanket before contacting animal services.

“He was camouflaged in all the other garbage,” Animal Control Officer Jose Fernandez told CBS Los Angeles. “From a distance, he would have looked like a discarded towel.”

The puppy, who has been nicknamed Cooper, has injuries in his front two legs which veterinarians say seem suspicious and non-accidental.
It is likely his legs will need to be amputated. For now, veterinarians at the Loma Linda Animal Hospital are treating him with pain medication and antibiotics.
An animal rescue group based in Idaho has already offered to help pay for the dog’s prosthetics, which will help him get around on a set of wheels in his new home.
