EDMONTON — It was a new development that promised luxury living near the heart of the city, but several years later, the Glenora Skyline project sits idle.
The construction site has remained relatively unchanged for more than a year. However, there could soon be movement on the planned three-tower development near 142 Street and Stony Plain Road.
“We have been having ongoing conversations with the owners,” said Scott Mackie, the city’s manager of current planning.
“We certainly are encouraging them to recommence construction.
“My understanding is they are doing some regrouping,” Mackie added.
The development company encountered financial and legal issues including mortgages and lien holders. The Glenora Skyline Development Corporation declined a request from Global News for comment, however the president of the MK group of companies – which is facilitating the acquisition – said the legal issues are being dealt with and a resolution could happen by mid-March.
“I think it’s an eyesore for this neighbourhood,” said Heidi Werosta, who runs a business in the area.
For the city, a main priority is ensuring public safety; that the site is protected and access is secure.
While the development is private, city officials indicate they could take more action under bylaws or the Safety Codes Act if they feel progress is dragging too long or if safety risks are identified.
