Robot creations put to the test

After months of designing and building robots, students in the Central Okanagan got to put their creations to the test.

On Friday, the sixth annual Western Canada RoboCup Junior Games took place at the Kelowna campus of Okanagan College.

Teams of students competed to see which of them created the robot that best negotiated three different challenges: soccer, rescue and dance.

The soccer challenge required the robots to track a special light-emitting ball in an enclosed field and attempt to score goals.

In rescue, robots followed a course, negotiated uneven terrain and identified victims within disaster scenarios.

In the dance challenge, robots performed choreographed routines set to music and were judged on robot programming, design, costume, use of stage and entertainment value.

The students designed, programmed and built the robots themselves.

The top three winners in each of the three categories qualify to compete in the World RoboCup in Mexico City next June.
