EDMONTON — The saying “if you don’t like the weather in Alberta now, just wait a five minutes,” seems especially true in Edmonton this winter.
The city and surrounding area continues to experience spring-like conditions one day and winter-like conditions the next day.
With the temperature rising to 8°C Monday and 7°C Tuesday and February quickly coming to an end, many Edmontonians were hoping winter was behind them. But not so fast. As has been the trend in recent weeks, the above seasonal conditions have been followed by a considerable drop in temperature.
The city was hit with a snowfall Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, and the temperature had dropped to -15°C as residents woke up.
The change in conditions made for a slick drive for motorists.

The drastic rise and fall of the temperature has been a common trend in February.
“Freeze/thaw cycles are not uncommon for this time of the year however if you compare Feb. 2014 to Feb. 2015 temperatures have been considerably warmer this year,” says weather specialist Mike Sobel.
“Daytime highs made to above the zero mark 4 times last Feb. compared to 12 times this year.”
Sobel expects the below seasonal temperatures to continue for the rest of the week.
The normal high in Edmonton at this time of the year is -2°C.
