CALGARY – The Alberta SPCA says they’ve found a new home for dozens of cold-blooded critters from a Drumheller zoo.

Staff with the organization took 142 reptiles and amphibians into protective custody from Reptile World following an investigation into animal welfare. All of the animals were found to be in distress, and nine had to euthanized by a veterinarian because their distress was untreatable.

The only animals that remained at the zoo, an additional 55 reptiles, were later voluntarily surrendered by the zoo’s owner.

The SPCA says the animals had been left on site either because their health was stable, or because they were too dangerous for the officers to move safely.

On Friday, the Alberta SPCA announced all the alligators, crocodiles and caimans from Reptile World will eventually be moving to an outdoor facility in South Carolina.
