Sentencing hearing Thursday for Neil Snelson

On Thursday, the sentencing hearing for a Kelowna man convicted in a high profile murder trial will begin.

In October, Neil Snelson was found guilty of manslaughter for the death of Jennifer Cusworth, 19.

The college student’s body was found in a ditch off Swamp Road in Kelowna on October 16, 1993.

The prosecution argued Snelson strangled, raped then beat Cusworth to death before dumping her body.

Snelson took the stand in his own defense and admitted he had sex with Cusworth at a house party but denied killing her.

DNA evidence is what linked Snelson to the cold case.

He has spent two years behind bars awaiting trial and could receive double credit for that time.

A manslaughter conviction allows for anything from a suspended sentence to life in prison.

Cusworth’s mother is expected to read a victim impact statement at the hearing, which could take two days.
