WATCH: Brampton teen assaults police officer during arrest

WATCH: Two teens are now facing several criminal charges after an alleged assault was caught on camera. Lama Nicolas reports.

TORONTO – Two teenagers are facing a series of charges for assaulting a Toronto area police officer after a violent exchange that was caught on video.

Peel Regional Police say the incident occurred Tuesday afternoon outside St. Marguerite d’Youville Public School on Dixie Road in Brampton west of Toronto.

Officer had asked the two girls to leave the school property. A struggle broke out when the girls refused to leave.

A video of the altercation posted on social media appears to show a girl repeatedly slapping a female police officer in the head and was later attacked by a second person from behind.

The officer is then seen spraying a substance at one of the teens before both of them run away.

The girls were later apprehended by another officer nearby.

The the union representing Peel Police said the officer, who suffered minor injuries, “did what she had to do.”

“There was nobody injured as a result of this, and the two parties are under arrest,” Paul Black, president of the Peel Regional Police Association said during a press conference Wednesday.

Black said the officer returned to work Wednesday.

Both girls, 15 and 16 years of age, have been charged with trespassing, assaulting a peace officer and assisting in escape from lawful custody.

Peel Police Constable Fiona Thivierge said Wednesday it was “shocking” to see her colleague assaulted while hearing the person shooting the video laughing.

The teens cannot be identified under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and are scheduled to appear in court March 17.
