Public meetings begin regarding electricity transmission grid

 The first of five public meetings on proposed additions to the electricity transmission grid south and west of Edmonton was held today.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is looking for feedback from the public on possible new transmission lines south of Stony Plain and Edmonton, new substations south of Stony Plain and north of Leduc and several modifications to existing substations.

Officials say the changes are needed as the population continues to grow.

“The load is growing in this area,” says Ata Rehman of the AESO, “In the next 10 years we are expecting the load to grow at a rate of 2.7% per year. And that is driving the need to reinforce the transfer system in this area.”
