Toronto can expect a “prolonged period of very cold wind chills,” making it feel like -35C to -40C out there. The alert was issued late Saturday morning, with the cold expected through Sunday.
The agency warns frostbite can occur to exposed skin within minutes, and urges people to exercise extreme caution while outdoors.
Weather-appropriate clothing is encouraged, with synthetic and wool fabrics working best to keep you insulated from the cold. Layers, especially with a wind-resistant outer layer are recommended along with covering up from head to toes.
The alert recommends avoiding alcohol if you plan to be outdoors, as its consumption can make you feel warm even as you’re losing heat.
