9 Quebecers honoured with Order of Canada

MONTREAL — Nine Quebecers were honoured with the Order of Canada in Ottawa Friday.

The Governor General of Canada, David Johnston, presided over an Order of Canada investiture ceremony at Rideau Hall, where 46 recipients were honoured with the award.

Those nominated from Quebec include Brigadier-General Pierre Boutet (Lévis); author Denise Desautels (Montreal); Catherine Anita Hankins (Sutton), an early leader in the fight against AIDS; Joan Ivory (Westmount), a tireless volunteer most notably with the MUHC and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Peter Ernest Murdoch (Roxboro), a pioneer of the Nunavik cooperative movement; Michel Phaneuf (Mont-Royal), the author of Quebec’s annual wine book, Guide du Vin; award-winning producer and actress Denise Robert (Montreal); and pop singer René Simard (Lorraine).

Mathematician and founder of the road safety program Opération Nez Rouge, Jean-Marie De Koninck (Lac-Beauport), was promoted within the Order to become an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Other prominent Canadians who made the list include actor, writer, singer and producer Paul Gross, legal scholar Donald McRae and arts philanthropist and businessman Jim Fleck.

The Order of Canada was created in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation and more than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been honoured.
